The Business Showers Series
PRESENTED BY BLACK UNITED FUND OF OREGON
“When you are a founder, your big idea is your baby. We know it takes a village to raise a child."
Introduction
The Black United Fund of Oregon is proud to present some of the brightest founders in our community. The first “business shower” we are throwing is to celebrate Hairspiracy.
About
HairSpiracy is a community centered hair education initiative that uses education, art, fashion, and creative experiences as entry points for learning. At its core, HairSpiracy is rooted in education that is historical, cultural, and technical, exploring hair from every angle including history, chemistry, care, and cultural meaning across communities.
The hair and beauty industry is a billion dollar industry in the United States. While Black people and Black women are primary consumers and cultural drivers within the hair industry, a much smaller percentage actually own the products and brands most commonly used. HairSpiracy exists in part to address this imbalance through education, visibility, and intentional collaboration.
HairSpiracy is for everyone and all are welcome. We work to break down barriers that have made hair knowledge inaccessible or misunderstood, creating spaces where people can learn openly, ask questions, and engage with hair in ways that feel safe, affirming, and culturally responsive.
Our programming connects with adoptees, mixed families, youth, teens, caregivers, and adults. Whether an event is rooted in education, art, or fashion, the goal remains the same: everyone leaves having learned something new and feeling more connected to their hair, identity, and community.
HairSpiracy intentionally collaborates with hairstylists, educators, artists, and product makers who are actively doing the work in their communities. By showcasing people who both use and create hair products, HairSpiracy works to increase visibility, circulate opportunity, and support a more equitable and thriving hair industry.
Through education, creative programming, and intentional partnerships, HairSpiracy continues to expand across Oregon with a focus on shared knowledge, collective growth, and ensuring everyone feels seen and included.
Meet the Founder
Hanna Steigman
Hi, I’m Hanna Steigman. I was born in Liberia, and during the civil war I was displaced from my family and later adopted by a white family from Central Oregon. They did everything they could to make sure I felt loved and supported.
I remember a Haitian woman being gracious enough to teach my mom a few times and give her tips on how to care for and do my hair. But my mom did seek her out and asked her questions which I definitely respect. Over the years, I’ve had locs, Sisterlocks, relaxed hair, etc. Let’s just say it was a journey. It wasn’t always easy, but it was a real learning experience for both of us, and one I’m deeply grateful for.
Growing up, I often didn’t see many people who looked like me, and that shaped how I understood myself and my hair. Later, I worked at a beauty supply store, where I got to see firsthand how hair products are sold, learned about, and accessed by the community.
HairSpiracy grew from those experiences. It’s about learning together, feeling comfortable in your own skin, and creating space where people feel seen, supported, and connected — through hair, community, and care.
Celebrating HairSpiracy, LLC
The Black United Fund of Oregon’s inaugural business shower for HairSpiracy LLC, not unlike a beautiful baby shower, was filled with love, storytelling, and of course, gifts! Hanna told of her story that motivated her to start HairSpiracy (while working a job and as a single mother of twins), her work to educate children and teenagers about how to love their hair, and her dream to economically empower the Black community by showcasing Black-owned products. She was showered with love from supporters, family, friends, and partners!
